In collaboration with the Kasa Project currently on display in the Then They Came For Me exhibition, we are hosting this family-friendly event to explore the power of art to capture our family stories.
The Kasa (umbrellas) in the exhibition are visual interpretations of the stories held by survivors of the Japanese American incarceration. Their stories speak to the ramifications that incarceration, separation of families, racism and other injustices cause for the survivors and subsequent generations that follow. This umbrella activity offers you the personal freedom to paint/draw your or your family story through symbols, words and imagery by designing your own kasa!
Kasa Project artist Dana Kawano will be joining us at 1pm to talk more about her project and help you make your own kasa before you see her kasa used in the performance Ikkai: Once.
