Summer is here! Catch our First Thursday Happy Hour and Presidio Twilight on June 6th! We are excited to host the local shave ice Pop-up, Always Aloha! Always Aloha’s owner and operator, Stephanie Iwasaki, has roots in O’ahu, Hawai’i and moved to San Francisco in 2012. Ever since, she has been sharing the sweet and refreshing flavors of her youth in the Bay Area.

Always Aloha seeks the freshest ingredients and is proud to support local farmers. Most importantly they aim to bring family and friends together, to create carefree moments and serve the best shave ice possible. Explore the delicious weekly flavor offerings at their Instagram @alwaysalohashaveiceco!

The first 20 visitors through the exhibition will receive a voucher for a free keiki-sized shave ice! Check in at the front desk for more details on the night of the event.

When the Japanese came to Hawaiʻi they brought with them unique cooking styles and ingredients including miso, sake, and tempura. Shave ice, a refreshing treat that has become synonymous with Hawaiʻi, is also believed to have been introduced by Japanese plantation workers inspired by kakigori, an ice dessert from Japan. Shave ice was originally a special treat enjoyed only on Sundays, the one day of the week that plantation workers had off. Japanese workers would use their machetes to shave thin pieces off of ice blocks and flavor them with fruit juice. Small stores began to sell shave ice in the 1920s but it was not until the 1950/60s that sales really began to soar.

We look forward to seeing you on June 6th  as we further explore the Japanese American experience in Hawaiʻi while sampling some sweet treats!

As always, we will be offering complimentary drinks (age 21+) and after-hour access to the exhibition.

With live DJ: Guggenhan
